Reality

The noise so sudden and shocking
makes me cling to you.

Blood smears across
the window pane,
feathers flutter.
Its neck broken.
Part of creation lays motionless
on your patio.
Its watery crimson blood
taints the garden.
Shattered wings now only controlled
by the wind.

A birthday gift, parting with a kiss.
Yearning to be closer to you;
stifled by this death.

The horror of reality stares
at us through the lifeless glass eyes
of a pigeon.

    1. Awww nooooo poor cat! Think I would have nightmares too. I did have a nightmare about this experience though, which is why I wrote a poem to release it from my mind.

    1. Thank you. Really feel sorry for birds who are destroyed by man-made things, seems so unfair...

    1. Seriously think everyone should put something on their windows so birds don't fly into them...

  10. Cat, you really nailed that image. That line, shattered wings now only controlled by the wind.. excellent. Though it makes me so sad when that happens. It must have been chased by something to hit with such force--poor pigeon and poor you

  11. I hate it when this happens. I like the way the second stanza fits in, how a brush with death colors our emotions. Good one!

  13. It seems we were sharing a muse. I am always so touched by the death of a helpless being and because I live where there is an abundance of birds, it happens too often. Somewhere I have a similar poem about a perfect quail that flew into my kitchen window.

    1. That's so sad... I would hate to see it as regular occurrence, once was enough for me. Think it's very cool that we shared a muse *smiles,
